What is Popdarts?
Popdarts is a party game in which players throw suction cup darts toward a Target Marker, with points awarded for the closest dart. The physical game is produced by the Popdarts company. This browser version is created by SMALLDESIRE and is not the official Popdarts website.
How to play Popdarts with a physical set
Land your darts upright on a smooth surface, aim close to the Target Marker, and use cancellation scoring.
- Place the Target Marker on a smooth surface as your target.
- For casual play, throw from at least 10 feet, or about 3 meters, away from the Marker.
- Throw toward the Marker, aiming to land suction-cup first so the dart sticks upright.
- Award 3 points to the closest upright dart and 1 point to each other upright, attached dart, then subtract the teams’ scores to determine the points added to the total.
- Keep throwing and scoring until a team reaches 21 points or more to win.
How to throw Popdarts
- Choose a smooth surface, such as glass or a countertop; the suction cups only stick to smooth surfaces.
- Aim to land suction-cup first and leave the dart standing upright.
- Keep the darts and suction cups clean; rinse dirty darts with water or put them in the dishwasher.
- Check your throwing distance: at least 10 feet for casual play, or 17 feet for APL competition.
Playing at parties, at home, or on a camping trip
For a party, a get-together, or a camping trip, look for a smooth playing surface. Official examples include glass, countertops, windows, shower walls, refrigerators, and car hoods. Popdarts can be played indoors or outdoors. Rookie Pack is aimed at beginners and families, while Swaptop provides a portable frame and board for a backyard or somewhere without a large tabletop.
How to play
- Swipe upward from the lower half of the screen to throw a dart. Faster swipes send the dart farther.
- The dart’s horizontal position follows the finger, and the throwing direction follows the direction of the swipe.
- Throw settings include base power, swipe boost, direction sensitivity, and whether the dart follows the finger. Changes take effect immediately and are saved on the device; settings can be opened from the upper-right corner at any time during play.
Game modes
- Practice: A single-player mode for practicing throws.
- Tutorial: Eight steps explain the Target Marker, throwing, dead darts, Kiss, Land on Top, and Wigglenobber in sequence. The tutorial ends with a round against the computer on Easy difficulty to demonstrate how the two teams’ scores are subtracted.
- Play the computer: Choose Easy, Normal, or Hard difficulty and either the casual rules or American Popdarts League (APL) competition rules. APL matches take place in the arena, with a fixed Target Marker and a Tower at the table corner.
- Pass and play: Two to four players take turns using the same phone.
- Championship: Occasional limited-time events consist of four stages in the arena, with event-exclusive darts awarded for winning. A win against the computer on Normal difficulty is required to enter.
Scoring
- Scoring begins after every player has thrown all three darts.
- The upright dart closest to the Target Marker scores 3 points. Each other upright dart scores 1 point.
- An upright dart touching the Target Marker earns 1 additional point. This is called a Kiss.
- A dart attached to the top of the Target Marker scores 10 points. This is called Land on Top.
- A dart stacked on another dart scores twice the value of the dart underneath it. This is called a Wigglenobber.
- Fallen darts are dead darts and do not score.
- At the end of each round, the two teams’ scores are subtracted. The team with the higher score receives the difference.
- The first team to reach a cumulative score of 21 points wins.
These are the official scoring rules. See the complete rules for details.
Match history and dart draws
Match records are saved only for completed matches. Records remain on the device and are not uploaded. The match results include the final score, a score progression chart, and scores for each round, with a replay available for every round. An overhead view is available during play and on the results screen, with dragging and two-finger zoom controls. A dart draw is available every 5 minutes. Drawn darts are added to the collection and can be selected for use; collection data is also saved on the device.
Scoring a physical game
The site’s score keeper supports physical Popdarts games with two to four teams. It can record total scores or scores for each round, and incorrect entries can be undone. The site also provides the complete rules, with Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean versions available. Physical Popdarts and Target Markers must be purchased from Popdarts directly.
